Robert McCloskey was a world-renowned author and illustrator of children's books. The McCloskey exhibit, Season of Wonder, at Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park honors his legacy and lasting impact, as well as highlighting his roots in Hamilton, Ohio.
Make Way for Robert McCloskey
Robert McCloskey (1914 – 2003) was born on September 15, 1914 in Hamilton. He wrote and illustrated eight picture books for children. To this day, they are considered some of the most honored and enduring children’s books ever published.
His roots in Hamilton add a special dimension to his story, reminding us of the profound impact that a small-town upbringing can have on a creative mind. Growing up, he developed a deep appreciation for the simplicity and beauty of everyday life that would later become a hallmark of his work.
What sets McCloskey apart is his ability to capture the essence of childhood with authenticity and charm. His illustrations highlight everyday moments that are infused with magic.
As an adult, Robert spent time in Boston, New York, and finally Maine, where he and his wife raised their two daughters. You can see some of his most loved characters immortalized as statues and murals in Boston’s Public Garden and around Hamilton.
McCloskey was the first ever two-time Caldecott Medal winner, for Make Way for Ducklings (published in 1941) and Time of Wonder (published in 1957). He was also awarded Caldecott Honors for Blueberries for Sal (published in 1948) and One Morning in Maine (published in 1952). In 2000, he was declared a Living Legend by the Library of Congress.
Pictured above is his Caldecott Medal for Time of Wonder in 1957, showcased in the McCloskey Wonder Works Museum. Robert's spirit lives on through the museum and his timeless books— inviting new generations to discover the simple joys and wonders of childhood.
One of Robert's books, Homer Price (published in 1943), was even made into a film. The story follows a young boy named Homer, who somehow gets involved in a series of outrageous incidents— such as tending an inexplicably unstoppable donut-making machine in his uncle's diner.
Heritage Hall
Heritage Hall at Hamilton's historic Municipal Building is covered in flat murals that were carved into the sandstone by Robert McCloskey when he was only 19 years old.
The carvings are beautiful and illustrate a long history of Hamilton, Ohio. The outside of the building also features a StreetSpark Mural titled, Make Way for McCloskey, that incorporates images from three of Robert's books; Blueberries for Sal, Make Way for Ducklings and Homer Price.
Right outside of the Municipal Building, you can find a statue of Lentil and his dog (pictured below). The statue was a gift from Hamilton's Community Foundation in celebration of their 50th anniversary. It was sculpted by Nancy Schön and dedicated in 2001. Nancy is best known for her work titled Make Way for Ducklings, inspired by Robert McCloskey's book and installed in 1987 in the Boston Public Garden.
