A one-of-a-kind memorial is officially open in Butler County, Ohio!
The USS Cincinnati Peace Pavilion in West Chester is more than a monument; it’s an immersive tribute to history and innovation. Located at Voice of America MetroPark, this impressive memorial honors the USS Cincinnati submarine (SSN-693). Designed to resemble a full-scale submarine in dry dock, the pavilion stretches approximately 360 feet long and incorporates real components from the original vessel.
A Landmark Years in the Making
The memorial has been more than 20 years in the making. The project found its permanent home in West Chester alongside the historic Voice of America Museum, creating a meaningful connection between two important pieces of history. Around 140 former crew members of the submarine visited the peace pavilion before it officially opened to the public on May 16, 2026.
Stretching approximately 360 feet long, the memorial incorporates real components from the original nuclear-powered submarine, including the conning tower, rudder, and the famous “Big Red Machine” diesel engine. The memorial’s guiding theme, “Peace is Our Purpose,” reflects the mission behind both the submarine and the educational experience visitors will encounter throughout the site.
What You'll Experience
Visitors can walk through the pavilion and explore preserved pieces of the real USS Cincinnati, while learning about Cold War history, naval innovation, and the people who served aboard the submarine. Organizers estimate that more than 1,000 sailors served on the USS Cincinnati during its years in operation between 1978 – 1996.
The full-sized replica of the famous Navy vessel includes about 100 tons of salvaged parts, and signage is set up throughout the pavilion that tells the history of the ship and the Cold War.
The memorial combines history with architecture, creating an experience that feels both educational and reflective. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a fan of engineering and technology, or simply looking for a unique stop, the USS Cincinnati Peace Pavilion offers an experience unlike anything else.
