Before there was a showroom filled with sparkling gemstones and custom heirlooms, there was a workbench in a basement. For master goldsmith Jeff Long, that workbench was the beginning of a career... and a family legacy.
After earning a degree in architecture, Jeff realized his future wasn't behind a drafting table. His brother owned a jewelry store, introducing him to the craft and eventually inspiring him to build his first workbench in his sister's basement. Rather than learning through formal classes, Jeff spent years developing his skills through hands-on experience, mastering the techniques and precision that jewelry making requires. In 1999, he opened JL Jewelers near his hometown in Fairfield, Ohio.
Today, JL Jewelers remains a true family business. Jeff's son, Alex, first started helping around the store at age 14 to earn money for a cellphone. What began as an after-school job grew into a career. Now a GIA-certified gemologist, Alex has learned the art of goldsmithing alongside his father, embracing both modern techniques and the traditional craftsmanship that has defined the family business for decades.
Alex's wife, Sierra, leads the shop's marketing efforts, while Jeff's son Nolan works in the store, specializing in watches and clocks. Jeff's other son also pursued a career in the jewelry industry, continuing the family legacy on the road.
For the Long family, it's about more than running a business. It's about preserving knowledge, passing skills from one generation to the next and creating quality pieces. Their business is built on creativity, artistry, and trust.

From simple repairs to one-of-a-kind creations, every project begins with a conversation. Jeff listens carefully, uncovering the story behind each request before sketching a design, selecting a stone and bringing the piece to life.
Every stone presents a new challenge, and every setting requires patience and precision. The finished piece takes shape step-by-step, refined along the way until it becomes what the customer imagined... or perhaps something even better.
Customers may arrive with a specific idea, a sentimental piece they want to reimagine or simply a feeling they want their jewelry to capture. The process can involve everything from selecting the right stone to soldering, shaping, setting and refining the finished piece. While the final result may look effortless, Alex says there's a lot of work that goes into creating jewelry built to last.
The Long family understands that jewelry often represents some of life's biggest moments; marriages, milestones, celebrations and memories. Their goal isn't only to create something beautiful, but to make something that feels personal to the person who will wear it. Ask Alex what makes jewelry truly meaningful, and his answer is simple:
"The most meaningful jewelry is your jewelry and what is special to you."
For Jeff, that personal connection is what makes the craft so rewarding. "It's all my passion," he says. "Every piece... it's all very personal."
Inspired by History + Nature
That passion extends beyond the jewelry itself. Jeff finds inspiration in timeless craftsmanship, collecting authentic historical coins dating back more than 2,000 years and incorporating them into distinctive designs.
The Historian Collection transforms these pieces of history into unique jewelry, including rings, necklaces, pendants, cuff links and more.
Alex, meanwhile, finds inspiration in nature and has a particular interest in gemstones. As a gemologist, he is captivated by stones that have spent millions of years hidden beneath the earth before eventually becoming part of his work. Sapphire is one of his favorites, due to its durability and unique color-changing abilities in different light.
"I love the art of creating, starting with pieces and making something to be part of someone's story," Alex says. "We make lifelong pieces."
There's a lot happening behind the scenes before a piece of jewelry receives its final polish. Customers may admire the finished product, but the Long family knows its beauty is found in the details: the countless hours of work, careful stone setting and precision required to bring an idea to life.
